The launch of Apple's new iPhones gave a boost to Hon Hai Precision Industry,
helping the world's largest contract electronics supplier post growth in
consolidated sales for the third quarter, market analysts said Thursday.
As the market had widely expected, Hon Hai's consolidated sales for September
rose more than 20% from August to return to the NT$300 billion (US$10.2 billion)
mark on the back of increased shipments to Apple.
Apple unveiled its latest two smartphone models — the high-end iPhone 5S and
the lower cost iPhone 5C — in the United States Sept. 10. It was the first time
the US-based consumer electronics giant had launched more than two iPhone models
at the same time.
Apple sold more than 9 million devices of the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C in
the first weekend after they went on sale in certain markets Sept. 20. The
figure was Apple's best first weekend iPhone sales and beat the previous market
estimate of 6 million-8 million devices.
In the July-September period, Hon Hai's consolidated sales rose 2.55% from a
quarter earlier to NT$918.54 billion (US$31.26 billion).
In September alone, its revenue totaled NT$337.86 billion (US$11.5 billion),
up 20.48% from August's NT$280.43 billion (US$9.54 billion) and also up 14.26%
from a year earlier. The September figure was the highest monthly level so far
this year.
Analysts said the sales in September recovered as many consumers put their
purchase plans on hold until Apple announced the launch of the two new
iPhones.
In addition to Apple's latest devices, Hon Hai benefited from its efforts to
assemble new smartphone models, in particular low-range ones, for the non-Apple
camp, witnessing its sales in September growing, they said.
Looking forward, analysts said Hon Hai is expected to post even higher sales
in the fourth quarter, which is a traditional peak season for the hi-tech
industry, on hopes that Apple's strong iPhone sales will continue, while orders
placed by non-Apple smartphone vendors could also lift the Taiwanese supplier's
shipments.
As Apple is likely to unveil new iPad models later this month, Hon Hai's
sales growth momentum is expected to accelerate in the October-December period,
they said, adding that the Taiwanese firm's monthly sales could hit a peak in
November or December for this year.
Despite the sales growth in September, Hon Hai's revenue for the first nine
months of this year fell 5.18% from a year earlier to NT$2.62 trillion (US$89.2
billion).
