Security is a weakness of the Android operating system and unless it is properly addressed, mobile internet usage based on the open-source software will not be possible, according to Pony Ma, founder of Chinese internet giant Tencent.
The risk is all the more evident in app stores, where the personal information of customers is vulnerable to theft, Ma said at a conference in Beijing.
Although it is an advantage that Android's code is open-source, the risk of the theft of personal information from customers' mobile phones is higher than for personal computers, he said. This problem will limit the development of mobile internet services based on the platform designed by Google.
Apple's IOS offers adequate protection of personal information from viruses and theft, but Android does not, thereby rendering its users vulnerable to attacks, Ma said.
Ma said his company would not profit by charging its customers for security, although this risk could cripple the Android-based mobile-device market which relies on the free platform to save costs.
